The Smallholder and Agri-SME Finance and Investment Network (SAFIN) is a partnership of actors committed to aligning their efforts to scale up access to financial services for agri-SMEs and small commercial farms. Small Foundation has supported SAFIN since 2018, providing financial support and training opportunities and leadership in network coordination and development.
Our partnership and learning:
SAFIN has grown to a network of 52 institutional and private capital providers working to address the gaps in the agri-SME finance ecosystem via knowledge sharing, advocacy and co-creation of initiatives aiming to increase access to capital and services for agri-SMEs. With Small Foundation’s support, SAFIN has built its network monitoring capability, deploying an annual network health survey; using social network analysis to visualise levels of communication, coordination and collaboration; and to develop a member engagement dashboard. With these tools, SAFIN have tracked their evolution, assessed the value of their tools, and used the information to inform the design of their network activities.
“In 2021, support from Small Foundation was fundamental in building SAFIN’s capacity to monitor and improve the health, connectivity and overall development of the impact network through a package of tools from the Small Foundation-Converge network evaluation toolkit. In early 2022, a training in impact networks was offered to the interim senior coordinator in support of the transition from its founding coordinator.”
